How did I start doing inner child meditation?
I started practicing inner child meditation seven years ago when I was going through a difficult time in my life. In the same year, my father passed away, I got divorced, and a big project I was working hard on failed. I felt on the verge of breaking down. But I had a lot of responsibilities and it was impossible for me to just stop doing my work. So I invested a lot of money in various therapy and healing retreats. It went very well and I could process my emotions in a safe and progressive way. But I also realized that I had unresolved issues from my childhood that were affecting my adult relationships and self-esteem.
My doubts about inner child meditation
When I first heard about inner child meditation, I was very skeptical of doing it. I thought it was a bunch of mumbo-jumbo that had no basis in reality. I was feeling a bit stupid just at the idea of imagining talking to an imaginary child inside me.
My first time
But later, this meditation has been gently introduced to me again in a retreat, and as we were in a very special moment and everybody was doing it, I just did it too and followed the instructions.
I was amazed by how powerful it was. I felt a surge of emotions when I saw my little self in front of me. As an adult guy not really connected to my emotions at that time, I was very surprised to feel my tears running down. It was very liberating for me to be able to cry and release those emotions.
I felt a wave of compassion and empathy for my inner child. I used to be very judgemental and tough on myself, so for the first time, I realize that there was this vulnerable part of me that was suffering from all this self-judgment.
Trying generic inner child meditation
After that amazing experience, I wanted to continue this work. I tried various generic inner child meditations on youtube but it was much harder for me to connect, and some sentences were totally off and breaking the visualization. I nearly gave up and forgot about it.
Doing it with a therapist
But then I worked with a therapist also working with inner child. She was really customizing the meditations according to my specific needs and preferences. For example, she knew how to relax me and how to put me in this specific meditative state. As she knew me well, she was also choosing very specific affirmations to say to my inner child. This was really healing.
How it improved my life
I have noticed many positive changes in my life since I started doing inner child meditation:
- I feel that I have much more self-love and self-acceptance.
- I’m much more connected to my emotions and able to process them instead of repressing them
- I have more joy and playfulness.
- I have more creativity and passion.
- I have more trust and intimacy in my relationships.
